Washington, DC – January 28, 2020. STS is proud to share our Federal News Network Insight: “Rare earth elements present challenges, opportunities to the U.S. economy, defense, and supply chain.” The President recently issued a Determination (July 2019) stating: “that the domestic production capability for separation and processing of Light Rare Earth Elements is essential to the national defense” (Presidential Determination Pursuant to Section 303 of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as amended). STS sat down with John Gilroy at Federal News Network to discuss Rare Earth Elements (REE) and the challenges and opportunities they present to the U.S. economy, defense, and supply chain.
As it relates to the economy, “If everything is tied into one source, one spot, or one country in this case, then you’re very limited. And if they decided to cut that off from you, then you lose all of your options,” General (R) John F. Campbell.
As it relates to the supply chain, “Rare Earth Elements . . . a critical component of the entire supply chain because it’s the beginning, the nexus of what all of the electronics come from. So, if you don’t have those, you can’t build them,” David Morgan, Co-Founder and Vice President, Operations, STS International.
